Position: Medical Assistant I

Job Summary

Position provides multiskilled healthcare support to clinic medical providers and patients through a variety of clinical and administrative functions, including patient rooming and vital signs, exam room preparation, basic procedure assistance, and electronic health records maintenance. Role supports patient care, documentation and workflow so that providers can focus on diagnosis and treatment.

Job Purpose

This position supports physicians and other providers in an outpatient setting by performing a combination of clinical and administrative tasks to ensure efficient, patient‑centered care is provided. The role helps maintain smooth patient flow, accurate medical documentation, and a safe, organized environment.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are the primary duties/main job responsibilities that an incumbent must be able to perform, with or without accommodation. Key accountability areas include clinical support, patient experience and education, and administration and records management.

Minimum Education Level

Required:

High school diploma and successful completion of an accredited postsecondary medical assistant certificate or diploma program with certification achievement completed.

Minimum Experience Level

Required:

No experience necessary. Six to twelve months of prior professional clinical or medical office experience preferred.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Previous professional customer service or office experience preferred.
  • Clinical skills including obtaining vital signs, performing basic diagnostic tests, injections and medications, phlebotomy and wound care.
  • Knowledge of basic anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology including common conditions, clinical terminology and medications.
  • Knowledge of principles of infection control, universal precautions, and safety, including proper cleaning, disinfection and sterilization procedures.
  • General understanding of safe specimen and medication handling, chain of custody concepts, and privacy/HIPAA regulations.
  • Ability to maintain composure, use sound judgment, and recognize when to elevate patient concerns or urgent changes in condition.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with patients and all levels of the organization and adapt messaging for the appropriate audience;
    Bilingual preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a team, demonstrate empathy and cultural sensitivity and build rapport with diverse patients and colleagues.
  • Basic technology skills (smartphone applications, scanners) and familiarity with electronic health records, scheduling systems, and basic coding/billing concepts.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills and abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal relationship skills, professionalism and high emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction including employees, patients, physicians and stakeholders.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, policies and procedures with attention to detail.
Physical Demands
  • High mobility, prolonged standing and walking, sometimes for extended periods without breaks.
  • High manual dexterity and repetitive movements using hands and fingers.
  • Motor vehicle and other transportation operations between campus locations and to off‑campus locations and events (Travel 5%).
  • Lifting items up to 50 pounds and physical exertion.
  • Frequent bending, stretching, twisting and reaching.
  • Access information using a computer.
Environmental Conditions

Indoors in an environmentally controlled space with exposure to environmental hazards (contaminants, hazardous equipment, and infectious disease). Occasional work outdoors exposed to elements.

Frequent performance of position duties while standing and walking and otherwise in motion.

Frequent computer use at a workstation up to two hours or more at a time.

Frequently fast‑paced work with unscheduled interruptions.

Work may require an adjusted work schedule, overtime, and evening/weekend hours to meet patient care demands.

Some public contact requiring business‑appropriate apparel and/or occasional use of personal protective equipment.
