Oakland School and Camp:
Oakland School is a small, co-ed day school and day and sleep away camp for young children, ages six to 15 (nine to 15 for summer camp) who need help reaching their academic potential. This includes those who may have learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, or ADHD, or any young learner who could benefit from an individualized learning plan and daily one-to-one instruction. Thanks to a success-oriented environment and time-tested methods, hundreds of students thrived at Oakland since the school's founding in 1950.

Oakland School is located on 450 acres of rolling countryside in central Virginia, just eleven miles east of Charlottesville. Oakland's peaceful country setting and nurturing environment allow for a truly remarkable learning and lifelong friendships to occur.

The Oakland Way:

Photo of Day & boarding programs in Virginia for kids with learning disabilitiesOur warm, nurturing atmosphere and farm-like setting create a safe space for children and teens to understand that their brains work a little differently. Through intensive academic instruction and emphasis on character development, we guide students through a journey of self-discovery, unlocking their potential to succeed and develop the confidence to take on even greater challenges after Oakland.

When students enroll at Oakland School, we closely examine their achievement test data across core academic areas then work hand in hand with parents to create specific goals and objectives to address the particular needs of their child. The result is the Individual Instruction Plan, a student’s educational roadmap for the year and a main component of The Oakland Way.

The plan gets updated quarterly and a new plan is written each year to continue setting interim goals for students. We keep parents apprised of their child’s progress with quarterly narrative reports, formal conferences three times a year, and open lines of communication via phone, email, or in-person conferences as needed.

Riding Program:

Image of Day & boarding programs in Virginia for kids with learning disabilitiesFor more than 60 years, our riding program has been an integral part of every student's Oakland experience. As the only independent school in the area with a built-in riding program, we pride ourselves in teaching children not just how to ride, show, and care for our horses but also developing students’ confidence, showmanship, responsibility, and empathy along the way.

All students have the opportunity to ride at no additional cost, and approximately 90% include riding in their daily schedule. Horses and riders are matched by size, experience, and personality. Typically, students will ride a particular horse for the duration of the year. This personalized approach encourages a special bond between horse and rider.

After rising lessons, students participate in barn work, which ensures that our horses receive special care they need; it also builds character and underscores the important responsibility of caring for animals. Students participating in barn work have a variety of responsibilities including grooming, cleaning stalls, and general horse care.
