The mission of the United States Embassy is to advance the interests of the United States, and to serve and protect U.S. citizens in Hungary.

Under the leadership of the Ambassador, the Embassy provides a number of services to Americans, Hungarian and other international people:

  • Explains and advocates the position of the United States Government and its citizens on bilateral and multi-lateral political, economic and social issues.
  • Works to ensure the security and well-being of U.S. citizens in Hungary, and grants visas to Hungarian citizens and other foreign nationals.
  • Reports to the United States Government Hungarian views on issues affecting American interests.
  • Promotes the expansion of American exports in Hungary, advocates open markets, and assists American businesses in establishing commercial links in Hungary and the EU.
  • Facilitates cultural and educational exchange between the United States and Hungary.

Consular services provided:

  • Emergency assistance;
  • Passports;
  • Report of birth, death;
  • Notarial services;
  • Voting.

If your passport is lost, stolen, or damaged, a replacement passport can be issued upon presentation of proof of identity and U.S. citizenship (e.g., birth certificate, driver’s license, or previous passport).

To replace your lost or stolen passport, you will need:

  • For an adult passport, 135 USD (or HUF equivalent), and for a minor passport, 105 USD (or HUF equivalent). Payment can be made in cash or by credit card.
  • Form DS-11: Application for a U.S. Passport
  • Form DS-64: Statement Regarding a Lost or Stolen U.S. Passport Book And/Or Card
  • One 5 cm x 5 cm (or 2″x 2″) photo with a light background
  • For a stolen passport, the police report documenting the theft
  • All applicants issued a Social Security Number, including children under 16, must provide it on their passport application forms in accordance with 22 U.S.C. 2741a and 22 C.F.R. 51.60(f).

Hungarian citizens intending to visit the United States for tourism or business for up to 90 days are eligible to travel under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) if all of the following requirements apply:

  • The traveler is in possession of a valid Hungarian passport. Your passport must be valid for six months past your expected stay in the United States and you must not have reported it lost or stolen.
  • The traveler is holding a return or onward ticket to his or her country of residence. If traveling on an electronic ticket, a copy of the itinerary must be carried for presentation to U.S. immigration at the port of entry.
  • The traveler has complied with the conditions of previous admissions to the United States and has not been found ineligible for a U.S. visa.
  • The traveler has a valid authorization from the Department of Homeland Security’s Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).  Please print your authorization and carry it with you when you travel.

The Embassy is closed on Public Holidays.
