Puesto: Primary Teaching Assistant (Maternity Cover) SGB

Job Description Purpose of the Role

The Primary Teaching Assistant plays a key role in supporting the class teacher in delivering high-quality learning experiences for pupils. The role involves working closely with children to promote their academic, social, and emotional development within a safe, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment. The Teaching Assistant helps ensure that every child is supported to reach their full potential.

Responsibilities
  • Support the class teacher in the planning, preparation, and delivery of learning activities.
  • Work with individual pupils or small groups to reinforce learning and provide targeted support.
  • Assist in creating a positive, stimulating, and well-organised classroom environment.
  • Support pupils’ emotional wellbeing and behaviour in line with the school’s policies.
  • Help assess and record pupil progress, feeding back to the class teacher as appropriate.
  • Prepare and organise learning materials and classroom resources.
  • Support pupils with additional learning needs or special educational needs (SEN), adapting tasks where necessary.
  • Supervise pupils during classroom activities, break times, and school outings when required.
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe and inclusive school environment.
  • Participate in school meetings, training, and professional development opportunities.
Requirements
  • Experience working with children in an educational setting (primary age preferred).
  • A good understanding of child development and primary education practices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Patience, empathy, and a positive, proactive attitude.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • Relevant qualifications in education or childcare
  • A good level of English literacy and numeracy.
