Senior Officer – Sanctions Advisory
Ebury Malaga Office - Hybrid: 4 days in the office, 1 day working from home per week
The Senior Officer – Sanctions Advisory is responsible for providing expert guidance and specialized support for Ebury’s sanctions compliance framework across Global. This role serves as a crucial point of escalation, ensuring that complex business transactions, client onboardings, and operational queries are fully aligned with internal risk appetite and external regulatory requirements, including OFSI, EU, US and relevant local authorities.
What you’ll do- Sanctions Advisory & Escalations:
Serve as the SME for the business and first-line defense teams. Review and adjudicate complex Level 2/Level 3 sanctions escalations, providing clear, actionable advice on proposed transactions, trade finance deals, and high‑risk client onboardings. - Regulatory Analysis & Interpretation:
Continuously monitor updates and guidance from major sanctions bodies (e.g., OFAC, HM Treasury/OFSI, EU, UN) and analyze the impact of new designations, general licenses, and sectoral sanctions on Ebury’s operations and advise stakeholders accordingly. - Policy & Governance:
Assist in the continuous improvement of the Group Sanctions Policy; draft and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) and advisory notes to ensure business units understand and implement sanctions requirements effectively. - Complex Investigations:
Conduct deep-dive investigations into potential sanctions breaches or highly complex matches (e.g., multi‑jurisdictional supply chains, obscure UBO structures, and potential evasion typologies). - Training & Awareness:
Develop and deliver targeted, real‑world sanctions training to operational teams, sales staff, and compliance peers to elevate the organization’s overall sanctions awareness and first‑line defense capabilities. - Strategic Alignment:
Collaborate with the Sanctions Screening and Systems teams to provide feedback on false‑positive trends and true‑match typologies, helping to optimise and tune global screening logic and minimise operational friction.
- Sanctions Expertise: 3–5+ years of experience in a financial crime compliance role, with a dedicated focus on sanctions advisory, complex alert adjudication, or sanctions investigations.
- Regulatory Knowledge:
Deep working knowledge of international sanctions regimes (particularly OFAC, OFSI, and EU) and an understanding of the legal concepts surrounding asset freezing, ownership/control rules, and sectoral restrictions. - Technical
Skills:
Proficiency in navigating and investigating corporate registries to unwrap complex UBO structures; familiarity with industry‑standard screening platforms (e.g., Lexis Nexis, Dow Jones, Firco Soft) and case‑management systems. - Analytical & Communication
Skills:
Exceptional ability to interpret dense legal/regulatory text and translate it into practical, easy‑to‑understand business advice; strong written communication skills for drafting formal advisory opinions and memos. - Business Acumen:
Proven ability to balance strict regulatory adherence with commercial realities, offering compliance solutions that protect the firm while supporting legitimate business growth.
