In partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA), Starion is part of a consortium of leading partners working to develop and demonstrate a next‑generation operational testbed for end‑to‑end quantum‑safe communications. Our focus is to deliver practical, secure solutions across both fibre and satellite networks, seamlessly integrated into existing national and international infrastructures.
Starion is seeking a Software Engineer to support the INT‑UQKD project. In this role, you will help design and implement advanced quantum‑safe security protocols, as well as develop simulations and monitoring tools to support complex internal system processes. You will work closely with an international, multidisciplinary team to understand the components of the overall system, create interfaces with them, and model their behaviours effectively.
Tasksand activities
- Understanding the overall system and its subdivision into subsystems.
- Building and deploying distributed backend software with secure, standards‑compliant interfaces such as REST APIs.
- Managing CI/CD pipelines in an automated build setup.
- Building and maintaining backend software in Rust or Python.
- Guaranteeing high‑quality, secure, and performant code across all deliverables.
- Leading reviews, sharing knowledge, and managing clean code and technical debt management.
- Providing critical analysis of development practices to enhance software quality and team efficiency.
- Quickly diagnosing and resolving complex issues across the full stack, proactively recommending and implementing refactoring or enhancements.
- Coordinating with external teams managing system dependencies while contributing to the development and maintenance of technical documentation.
The following skills and experience are mandatory:
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Aerospace, or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Software Engineer, preferably in an international setting.
- Professional experience with at least one high‑level programming language such as C/C++ or Rust.
- Professional experience developing backend subsystems and implementing secure interfaces.
- Familiar with secure development practices and security tooling.
- Experience working with Dev Sec Ops pipelines, source control, and automated testing.
- Comfortable in Linux environments and skilled at connecting teams across different technical domains.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
The following skills and experience would be highly desirable:
- Experience delivering projects aligned with international space, military, and regulatory standards (e.g., ECSS, CCSDS, IDSIS, MIL‑STD, NATO, ETSI, ITU, 3
GPP). - Proficient with modelling and simulation tools (MATLAB, Simulink, Wolfram System Modeler, etc.).
- Knowledge of space and terrestrial telecom systems.
- MBSE methodology knowledge.
- A working knowledge of another European language, such as French or German.
- Hands‑on cybersecurity experience.
- NATO and/or EU security clearances are an asset. The candidate must be willing to undergo a security clearance procedure.
