One Postdoctoral Contract FC2 Galactic Archaeology with OUTLIERS 2025 (PS-)
The IAC (Tenerife) invites applications for ONE FC2 postdoctoral contractto work on the project linked to the line of research “Chemical Abundances in stars” in the framework of the European Research Council Starting Grant funded project“Observing Unique sTars and ga Lactic chem
Ical Evidence of the fiRst relicS
-OUTLIERS” (HORIZON EUROPE ERC-2025-STG, GAP: ) led by Dr. David Aguado.
The successful candidate will be based at the IAC’s headquarters in La Laguna (Tenerife), working in a stimulating research environment. They will join OUTLIERS , a dynamic, inclusive, and diverse team committed to high-quality scientific research in stellar spectroscopy of metal-poor stars, combining observational (e.g. DESI, WEAVE, 4
MOST, Gaia) and theoretical lines, as well as ground-based observations from the observatories in the Canary Islands. The group promotes a collaborative atmosphere grounded in respect, teamwork, and scientific excellence, integrated in the Chemical Abundances in Stars research line at the IAC.
Research topics at the IAC include most areas of astrophysics:
Solar Physics (FS), Exoplanetary System and Solar System (SEYSS), Stellar and Interstellar Physics (FEEI), The Milky Way and The Local Group (MWLG), Formation and Evolution of Galaxies (FYEG), and Cosmology and Astroparticles (CYA-CTA). All of these are supported by an ambitious instrumentation programme. Further information about the IAC's research programme, its Observatories and the 10.4m GTC is available at the IAC's web page: https://(Usted puede enviar una solicitud o contactar con nosotros por email usando el Buzón de Solicitud online de abajo)/en
Tasks: The successful candidate will pursue research in the following fields:
- Analyse spectroscopic data of all types (from low- to high-resolution) and contribute to the scientific objectives and management (scientific and financial) of the OUTLIERS work packages.
- Co-supervise a PhD project within the OUTLIERS team.
- Prepare observing proposals and supercomputing time requests aligned with the project’s scientific goals.
- Perform service work (pipeline development, quality assurance, and catalogue construction) for current-generation spectroscopic surveys (DESI, WEAVE, and 4
MOST). - Co-lead the OUTLIERS outreach and dissemination programme.
- Develop and maintain spectroscopic databases, ensuring data integrity, standardization, and accessibility for project analyses.
Particular attention will be given to applicants with experience in the field of Galactic Archaeology, Stellar spectroscopy, and Large surveys.
Requirements: The candidates must have an excellent research record, commensurate with the duration of their research career. They must be in possession of a Ph.D. degree in Astrophysics or Physics by the Final date to receive applications.
Applications from candidates not in possession of a PhD will be rejected without further consideration
.
Candidates who prepared their thesis at the IAC have to present accreditations of complementary training at other research centers (this period should be either 1 continuous year or 18 accumulated months) by the Final date to receive applications. The IAC is an equal-opportunity employer. We encourage, in particular, applications by women and by members of minorities.
Selection process: The selection process consists of two phases: merit assessment and interview.
1.
First phase: merit assessment. The Selection Panel will verify and rate the merits documented by the applicants. The maximum score that can be awarded in this phase is 80 points, calculated as the sum of the scores obtained in each of the following two sections.
a)
CV (maximum score: 50 points ). Main criteria will be:
- Scientific and technical contributions to the field of research, especially those listed in the Science Citation Index, in relation to the duration of the candidate’s scientific career. Of special importance are the first-authored papers by the candidate.
- Appointments and stays (at the PhD or postdoctoral level) in prestigious research institutions.
- Conference contributions, especially those leading to publications.
- Other indicators of research activity and motivation (like invitations to lectures, organization of…
