Bilateral relations between Austria and Slovakia were established on 1 January 1993, and these two decades have seen noticeable progress in economic, political, cultural and cross-border cooperation. The business sector, in particular, is a highly dynamic success story. Austria is the second largest foreign investor in Slovakia and trade between the countries is increasing steadily. Political representatives of the two countries are discussing important issues regularly.
The Austrian Embassy in Bratislava provides an initial point of contact for various enquiries and interests. The Consular Section provides the following services:
- Legalisation
- Life Certificate
- Change of Name
- Passports
- Divorce
- Citizenship
- Police Clearance Certificate
- Translations, etc.
One of the key functions of the Embassy is as a support service for expatriate and visiting Austrians. The Consulate provides services regarding the issuing of passports and visa, and many more.
Austrian citizens living abroad permanently may also apply for an Austrian passport with the local authorities (city or county government) while in Austria. Since March 30, 2009 all new Austrian passports include fingerprints. The fingerprints will be saved on the chip and not shown in the passport. All applicants are therefore requested to appear in person when applying for an Austrian passport. The Austrian Consulate General cannot accept passport applications by mail. All valid Austrian passports will stay valid until their expiration date and don't need to be exchanged.
Austrian passports are valid for ten (10) years and cannot be renewed. Since March 30, 2009, biometric passports with fingerprints are issued in Austria. It takes approximately four weeks before the new passport may be handed over to the applicant.
All applicants including children and infants must be present at the Embassy when applying for new passports. Postal applications cannot be processed. The average processing time is 3 weeks. The opening hours for passport applications are Monday to Friday from 9.00 - 12.00.
Citizenship issues are a rather complicated matter and might need time to discuss. The Embassy recommends that one sends an e-mail and ask for an appointment before coming to the Embassy in person.
Holders of an EEA (EU Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) or Swiss passport do not require a visa. Nationals from EU-countries as well as Switzerland and Liechtenstein may stay for an unlimited time. Holders of Slovakian Passports (European Union) do not need a visa for Austria. There are no restrictions on the remaining validity of ones passport, providing the traveler leaves Austria before its expiry date.
