For the trip back home to Austria, the Embassy can provide Austrian citizens with an emergency passport, valid for up to six months. It usually takes at least 24 hours before such a passport can be issued. It is recommended to take a copy of a passport while on a trip to Australia. Furthermore, you must present to the Embassy proof that you have filed a police report and you must credibly show your identity (e.g. driver's license, identity witness) and citizenship.
