The Belgian Embassy in Washington is the formal communication link between the Belgian and the US governments. The Ambassador heads the Embassy and is the official representative to US of the Belgian Government. The Embassy fulfills the role of a Belgian public authority when it comes to consular and migration-related matters, which include issuance of passports and different kinds of certificates, visas for students, residence and work permits as well as assistance to Belgians in emergency situations.

The Consulate General acts as Registrar for Belgian nationals resident in the US: issues them with identity cards and passports, registers their births, deaths and marriages, enters them on the electoral rolls and organizes polling stations for major national elections, draws up notarial acts and ensures the protection of their rights with regards to the US authorities. It is also responsible for issuing visas pursuant to the Schengen Agreement to persons who require them.

Theft or loss of a valid passport must be reported to the police and a police report should be presented when applying for a new passport. Otherwise a passport is applied as normally. When reporting a lost passport to the police it should be noted that a report made by telephone and a registration number given  on the basis of that might not be adequate proof to the insurance company. The report can be made in person at a police station so that a report of the crime is available in writing.

Citizens of the United States traveling to Belgium must have a valid passport (that does not expire before the end of their visit), but do not require a visa for stays of less than 90 days within a six-month period.

Other travelers may apply for a Schengen visa, which allows them to enter Belgium or another Schengen country and then to travel freely throughout the Schengen zone for a period not to exceed 90 days.

Only at the Embassy in Washington one may pay with Visa or MasterCard. In New York the applicants can only pay with a money order or certified check.

The Embassy is closed during the following holidays:

  • January 1 - New Year's Day
  • January 21 - MLK Birthday
  • February 18 - President's Day
  • May 27 - Memorial Day
  • July 4 - Independence Day
