The Brazilian Embassy's Consular Section serves Brazilian citizens and foreigners residing permanently in Brazil with matters involving Brazilian authorities, such as passports, notary services and certain specific legal transactions, family law, citizenship and military service. The Consular Section assists Brazilian citizens in distress, gives information on the services provided by Brazilian authorities and the legal protection available to private citizens, and advises on general procedures related to legal or administrative matters in Brazil and Austria.

The Embassy can assist with the following:

  • Protect the legitimate interests of Brazilian citizens;
  • Provide assistance and guidance to underprivileged citizens;
  • Perform the duties of Notary Public and Civil registry officer, and as such, issue certificates of birth, marriage, death, power of attorney, declarations, recognizing signing Brazilians and foreigners with RNE/CIE valid etc.;
  • Shipping travel documents (passports, etc. ARBs)
  • Act as a military recruiter and electoral body;
  • Authenticate documents;

The consular authority works with the basic purpose of ensuring the effective respect for essential human rights of Brazilian citizens. Problems relating to arrest, detention or death of a Brazilian citizen should be immediately reported to the consular authority. The given consular assistance is entirely free.

Visas can be applied in person, by mail or through travel agencies depending on the type of the visa. The kind of visa to be applied for depends on the purpose of the applicant's trip to Brazil. Permanent visas are for immigration purposes, while temporary visas are for non-Brazilian citizens envisaging shorter stays in Brazil. Temporary visas have validity in time depending on the category of the visa and on Governmental agreements, if any, between Brazil and the country of the applicant's nationality.

Theft or loss of a valid passport must be reported to the police and a police report should be presented when applying for a new passport. Otherwise a passport is applied as normally. When reporting a lost passport to the police it should be noted that a report made by telephone and a registration number given  on the basis of that might not be adequate proof to the insurance company. The report can be made in person at a police station so that a report of the crime is available in writing.
