Foreign citizens travelling to Brazil as tourists or as participants in conferences, seminars, artistic or sports events must have a ‘Tourist Visa'. Extensions (once in Brazil only): up to a further 90 days, making up a maximum of six months in any twelve-month period. At least two weeks before expiration of the first granted period, tourists may apply for a single extension of an additional 90 days, granted at the discretion of the Brazilian Immigration Authority.

Emergency Technical Assistance Visa is issued, under exceptional circumstances, to foreign citizens travelling to Brazil to provide emergency technical assistance in cases where an unexpected situation has arisen, which puts human lives or the environment at immediate risk or which interrupts production.

It is possible for the Legalization and Passport Sections to receive and return documents/application by post. However, visas applications, power of attorney and registrations (birth, marriage or death) cannot be processed by post. Please allow standard postal delivery time in addition to the normal processing time of the relevant consular section, for the return of the documents by post.

Theft or loss of a valid passport must be reported to the police and a police report should be presented when applying for a new passport. Otherwise a passport is applied as normally. When reporting a lost passport to the police it should be noted that a report made by telephone and a registration number given on the basis of that might not be adequate proof to the insurance company. The report can be made in person at a police station so that a report of the crime is available in writing.
