Bulgaria and Britain established diplomatic relations in July 1879 and severed them on two occasions during the two world wars. Bilateral relations have gone through ups and downs in the course of history to the present day, when they are totally free of open problems. The two countries have signed a consular convention, an agreement relaxing the visa requirements, an agreement on business, industrial, scientific and technical cooperation, on avoidance of double taxation, on promotion and protection of investment, on cooperation between the two defence ministries, on cultural cooperation and on cooperation in the health sector.

The Consular Section of the Embassy provides a wide range of services including:

  • Issuance of passport
  • Issue of ID Card
  • Temporary passport
  • Continuing validity of the passport
  • Accelerated delivery of applications for documents
  • Lost and found documents
  • Bulgarian citizenship
  • Certification and legalization of documents
  • Certification of private documents
  • Legalization of documents
  • Consular Registration
  • Marriages
  • Visa, etc.

The Consular Section verifies the authenticity of copies, transcripts and excerpts from documents submitted by Bulgarian citizens. The documents submitted for verification must have been issued by a Bulgarian agency. To have their copies, etc. verified, the applicants should submit them together with the original documents. Consular officials are also empowered to draw up notary wills for Bulgarian citizens.

Any marriage conducted outside the Republic of Bulgaria by a Bulgarian citizen must be registered in Bulgaria. Once the marriage certificate is legalized, it has to be translated into Bulgarian by any licensed translation agency in Bulgaria or by a certified UK-based. If the translation had been made by a licensed translator in London, it has to be certified together with the original document at the Embassy's Consular Section.

The Bulgarian visas are issued by the Bulgarian embassies and consulates abroad, not at the airports or the land and sea passport control points in Bulgaria.

Holders of valid ordinary UK passports do not need a visa to visit Bulgaria for up to 90 days within each period of six months. A visa is issued only to holders of passports or travel documents that are valid for Bulgaria for at least 3 months after the end of the intended stay and that contain a blank page for affixing of visa vignettes.

NOTE: The Bulgarian Embassy in London is observing official Bulgarian and local holidays.
