Canada and Portugal share common values in the areas of human rights, democracy, rule of law, and governance.  Internationally, Canada and Portugal collaborate in various multilateral organizations including the United Nations, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and have worked alongside one another in international missions.

The Embassy of Canada in Lisbon, supported by Honorary Consulates in Ponta Delgada (Azores) and Faro (Algarve), provides services to Canadian visitors, including those in distress.

Consular services provided by the Embassy:

  • Issues passports;
  • Deals with citizenship matters;
  • Assists Canadian citizens in cases of emergency;
  • Certifies documents;
  • Registers Canadian citizens abroad.

Once a passport has been reported lost or stolen, it is no longer valid and cannot be used for travel. This is to ensure that it is not used for fraudulent purposes.

Office of the Embassy of Canada does not provide visa and immigration services. Visa application centres (VACs) accept applications for study permits, work permits, visitor visas (temporary resident visa), and travel documents for permanent residents.

Citizens of Portugal do not need a visa to visit or transit Canada.

While Portuguese citizens may not need a visa to visit or transit Canada, they still need to:

  • Show an immigration officer that they satisfy all other requirements to enter Canada. For instance, they may need a medical exam before arriving.
  • Carry proper travel documents and identification for themself and any children travelling with them.

The Embassy and Consulates are closed on public holidays.
