It is the Consulates’ role to protect and assist Cypriot citizens who are victims of crime or abuse, or who, for any reason whatsoever, find themselves in a situation of serious misfortune or need, thereby preventing any discrimination against them, due to their status as foreigners. In order to fulfil this role, the Consulates very often request the support and cooperation of the competent local authorities. Moreover, Cyprus’ Missions can provide “public services” in certain fields for Cypriot citizens living abroad (special requests for assistance that are not usually provided by the Public Services in Cyprus, cannot be offered).

It should be stressed and well understood that the areas in which the Cyprus Missions can act and react are not unlimited. The protection of the rights and lawful interests of the citizens of Cyprus is carried out strictly in accordance with the Cyprus Law, the Laws and Procedures of the host country, and the Rules of International Law. Services which fall under the competence of travel agencies, insurance companies, banks, hotels, etc., do not fall within our competence.

Cypriot citizens are kindly advised to inform Cypriot Missions abroad about their particulars and place of stay in the respective country and voluntarily register (free of charge) in the Mission’s Consular Registry. Registering in the Consular Registry, will enable the Cyprus Mission to better implement and protect your rights and interests (for example issuing a travel document), and also to render you assistance in an emergency, crisis or disaster (whether natural, or man-made), for example earthquake, road accident, terrorist attack, etc.

The Embassy can assist in the following emergency situations:

  • Assist you in cases of death, serious accident or serious illness, while abroad;
  • issue a temporary travel document (laissez passer), should your passport be out-of-date, lost or stolen;
  • furnish you with a list of local doctors, lawyers and translators;
  • help you to contact a person in Cyprus, who can give you the help you need;
  • assist persons arrested or detained;
  • in exceptional circumstances advance funds to allow for your repatriation. This assistance can be offered after, you or your family / acquaintances sign a relevant form (Assumption of Responsibility), agreeing to repay these funds to the Government of the Republic of Cyprus;
  • provide civil registry and notary services, legalise documents and forward applications and other papers to the competent Cypriot authorities (e.g. passport applications).

Loss or theft of travel documents (passports) while abroad is always an unpleasant experience, therefore, you should never leave these documents unattended (e.g. in your hotel room or in a vehicle) and if possible, you should always carry them on with you. In addition, you are strongly advised to take photocopies of your passport and to keep them in a secure place. Alternatively, you could note its identification number on a small, separate piece of paper, or in your diary, may prove very helpful and can speed up the procedures for issuing a temporary travel document.

Cypriot nationals, who have their passports lost, stolen or rendered invalid while abroad, should immediately contact the nearest police station in order to make a statement and ask for a copy of an official report, while simultaneously, informing the local Cyprus Diplomatic Mission, in order to be issued with a temporary travel document / certificate of identity (laissez-passer). This document certifies the identity of a person permanently residing in Cyprus and is valid for only one trip, allowing him / her to return to Cyprus.
