The Finnish Embassy's Consular Section serves Finnish citizens and foreigners residing permanently in Finland with matters involving Finnish authorities, such as passports, notary services and certain specific legal transactions, family law, citizenship and military service. The Consular Section assists Finnish citizens in distress, gives information on the services provided by Finnish authorities and the legal protection available to private citizens, and advises on general procedures related to legal or administrative matters in Finland and Austria. The Finnish Embassy also arranges for absentee voting in Finnish elections. Foreign citizens can consult the Embassy's Consular Section on matters related to visas and entry permits. Please read more from section: Visas and residence permits.

Finnish Embassies and Consulates can do the following:

  • advise on how to transfer money through a bank or other money transfer company (such as Western Union),
  • transfer funds to help those in distress,
  • help victims of sudden illness, accidents and crimes so that they can get the medical care or other immediate assistance they need,
  • grant a temporary passport for repatriation (to replace a passport which is outdated or which has been lost, stolen or destroyed),
  • contact the insurance company in cases of sickness or death,
  • help those in distress or crisis situations, or those taken into custody, to get in touch with their next of kin

Emergency passports may be issued for particular situations. The granting of emergency passports always involves careful consideration and is done on a case by case basis. A temporary passport is only valid for a limited period of time, normally the time it takes to return to one's country of residence. An emergency passport contains no technical component (microchip) and it is issued to the applicant on the spot.

It is the responsibility of the passport holder to ensure that the name in the passport corresponds to the name registered in the Finnish Population Information System. If a name changes, then that change must be registered in the Finnish Population Information System. A person with a new name must apply for a new passport if he/she wants to use the passport as a travel document.

Holders of an EEA (EU Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) or Swiss passport do not require a visa. Nationals from EU-countries as well as Switzerland and Liechtenstein may stay for an unlimited time. Holders of Austrian Passports (European Union) do not need a visa for Finland. There are no restrictions on the remaining validity of ones passport, providing the traveler leaves Italy before its expiry date.
