The Embassy of Finland in Canberra assists Finnish citizens residing in Australia and neighboring regions with passports and other questions pertaining to Finnish authorities.

Australian and New Zealand citizens can stay in Finland and the Schengen area visa-free up to 90 days within the period of 6 months. This 6-month period begins on the day of first entry to a Schengen country.

Agreements on working holidays have been in force between Finland and Australia and between Finland and New Zealand from 2002 and 2004 respectively. According to the agreements, citizens of Australia and New Zealand are permitted to reside in Finland for 12 months. A working holiday residence permits primarily intended for holiday, but it also involves the right to work to a limited extent. In Australia and New Zealand, the application has to be submitted in person to the Embassy of Finland in Canberra. The application may also be submitted to the Embassy or the Consulate of Finland in the country where the applicant is residing legally.

Getting a new passport in the Embassy usually takes 2-4 weeks for an ordinary passport. The express passport can be processed a bit quicker, but a certain fee is applicable. The passport can be collected at the Embassy. Alternatively it can be delivered to another mission or a police station. The passport can also be collected by an authorized representative on the request of the applicant. In case of a damaged or stolen passport one can get an emergency passport. An emergency passport is issued for the duration of your trip, but for no longer than 12 months. An emergency passport is issued by the Finish mission in Canberra. The applicants need to make an appointment with the Embassy by phone. The application fee is payable in cash to the Embassy when the application is submitted, the Embassy does not accept credit or debit cards.
