The Consular Section's main mission is to administer according to French laws and regulations the French community, whether transient or established in Austria. It is assisted in its work by the network of honorary consuls and offers the following services:

  • registration in the register of French outside France;
  • issuing passports and national identity cards;
  • registration of civil status acts (birth, marriage, parental recognition, death ...)
  • identifying young French;
  • the organization of some national elections (presidential and referenda) or specific French abroad (Assembly of French Citizens Abroad);
  • the establishment of proxies in national elections

The Consular Section also acts as a support function to the French that it protects (especially in case of arrest, incarceration, illness or serious accident), in compliance with local legislation. The Consul also chairs the local Commission scholarships.

The information contained in the Population Information System enables many rights and responsibilities to be determined. For example, the voting register is based on this information. If the address in the Population Information System is incorrect, then important documents regarding matters related to conscription, citizenship or notification of the right to vote may not reach the recipient.

A passport is an official document issued by the French Administration, when living abroad the Consulate/Embassy issues it. It proves the person's identity and allows one to travel abroad outside the EU. It can take several weeks to issue a passport as they are all produced in France. The consulate cannot intervene in the process of making the passport, therefore it is strongly advised to request it early enough to avoid disappointment if one had plans for traveling.

The private deeds are documents prepared by notaries in France. As they are not notarised deeds, one just needs to come in person in order to have their signature legalised by a Consular Officer or by an Honorary Consul. The applicant must bring their passport with them. Please note that it is not necessary to have an appointment if one comes to this Embassy - Just ask for the Notarial Department. As for the Honorary Consuls, it is necessary to contact them prior to the visit.
