The Consular Section's main mission is to administer according to French laws and regulations the French community, whether transient or established in Slovakia. It is assisted in its work by the network of honorary consuls and offers the following services:
  • registration in the register of French outside France;
  • issuing passports and national identity cards;
  • registration of civil status acts (birth, marriage, parental recognition, death ...)
  • identifying young French;
  • the organization of some national elections (presidential and referenda) or specific French abroad (Assembly of French Citizens Abroad);
  • the establishment of proxies in national elections
The Consular Section also acts as a support function to the French that it protects (especially in case of arrest, incarceration, illness or serious accident), in compliance with local legislation. The Consul also chairs the local Commission scholarships.

A passport is an official document issued by the French Administration, when living abroad the Consulate/Embassy issues it. It proves the person's identity and allows one to travel abroad outside the EU. It can take several weeks to issue a passport as they are all produced in France. The consulate cannot intervene in the process of making the passport, therefore it is strongly advised to request it early enough to avoid disappointment if one had plans for traveling.

NOTE:
The passport is individual, whatever the age of the applicant. Enrolling children in parent's passport is no longer possible.
The issuance of a passport is no longer linked to the residence. It is possible to apply for a biometric passport with a commune in France, equipped with the collection system. In this case, the withdrawal of the passport is mandatory at the place of filing.
Payment must be made in cash.

In case of a passport get lost or stolen the person must go the local police station to report it before coming to the consulate. There the applicant will be given a "crime number". One must then go to the consulate as soon as possible, and follow the procedure to renew the documents.
