The German Embassy in Canberra issue biometric passports to German citizens residing there.  For children under the age of 12 with German citizenship, a child's passport may also be issued instead of a regular passport. A new passport law has been in effect since 1 November 2007. Under this new law, fingerprints also must be stored on a chip contained in German biometric passports. This affects all passport applicants six years and older.

The Austrian Embassy in Canberra will be responsible for issuing Schengen Visas on behalf of Germany in all States and Territories of Australia effective from 01.09.2012. As a consequence, third country visa applicants with residence in Australia will have to launch their application for a Schengen-Visa (intended stay of up to 90 days in a 6 months period; e.g. tourist or business visa) with Australia Post for the Austrian Embassy in Canberra. Australian citizens are not affected: they do not need a visa for the Schengen Area, which includes Germany, for an intended stay of up to 90 days in a 180 day period.
