The German Embassy in Lithuania provides these consular services:

  • In case the passport has been stolen or lost, issues a travel document to return to Germany;
  • In case of lost money, helps contact relatives and friends;
  • If all forms of assistance have been exhausted, assists in getting back to Germany (citizen must repay all costs covered by the Embassy);
  • In case of problems with the host country's authorities, represents German citizens;
  • If necessary, appoints a trusted lawyer, doctor, interpreter, translator;
  • In case of arrest, death, informs relatives and helps with the formalities;
  • Assists in the search of a missing German citizen;
  • Issues visas for foreign nationals (non-EU) willing to travel to Germany;
  • Deals with certification and authentication of documents.

In case the passport or identity card is lost when traveling abroad, the Embassy may issue a temporary travel document to be able to return to Germany. The document is issued for the duration of the return trip to Germany, possibly via transit countries, but for no more than one month. If the stay abroad lasts longer or onward journey to other countries is planned, the Embassy may also issue temporary passports. Since the Embassy does not work on weekends and public holidays, passports can only be issued on business days.

Nationals of the European Union (EU) do not need a visa to enter Germany. Non-EU nationals require a visa for stay in Germany. A visa is not required for visits of up to 90 days in an 180 day period for nationals of those countries for which the European Community has abolished the visa requirement.
