Jurisdiction: no consular district. All residents of the administrative district have to approach the Consulate General in Toronto for any consular matters.

The German Embassy in Ottawa has no consular district assigned, as since April 1 2013. All residents of the administrative district have to approach the Consulate General in Toronto for any consular matters. Residents of the administrative district of the Embassy can apply for a passport at the Embassy in Ottawa. This service is limited to persons who have owned a valid passport in the last ten years. Due to a more extensive assessment in order to establish the citizenship and the name everyone else will need to apply for their passport at the Consulate General in Toronto. Irrespective wherever applying for a passport one needs to make an appointment beforehand. For Schengen visa (short term visa, e.g. for tourist, business affairs) one can apply at the Austrian Embassy in Ottawa.

In addition, limited consular services are also offered by the Honorary Consuls in Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Saskatoon, Saint John's and Winnipeg.

When getting a new passport it is required that the applicant appears in person at the German Foreign Mission. The German passport for applicants under the age of 24 will be valid for six years; otherwise, it will be valid for 10 years. It is not possible to extend an expired passport. Instead we will issue you a new document.

Canadian citizens do not need a visa to stay in Germany up to 90 days within 6 months period, if they do not intend to work in Germany. They may also spend this time in other Schengen countries if they stay as tourist or business traveler. The passport must be valid for at least the duration of the trip. However, it is recommend to travel with a passport which is valid for at least 3 months counting from the date of anticipated return to Canada.

 Canadians wishing to stay in Germany longer than 90 days have to apply for a residence permit.
