The German Embassy in Riga is the formal communication link between the German and the Latvian governments. The Ambassador heads the Embassy and is the official representative to Latvia of the German Government. The Embassy fulfills the role of a German public authority when it comes to consular and migration-related matters, which include issuance of passports and different kinds of certificates, visas for students, residence and work permits as well as assistance to Germans in emergency situations.
The Legal and Consular Section supports and advises German citizens within the bounds of its possibilities. This comprises such duties as are taken care of in Germany by passport offices and public authorities in charge of nationality matters, notary publics, the courts of law, registry offices and social services. Any Germans who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in an emergency situation in the host country are given assistance by the Embassy so that they are able to help themselves. Foreign nationals who are usually resident in Ireland can apply here for a visa to Germany and the Schengen member states.
Please note that all passport applicants have to make an appointment early in advance. Passport applicants are required to apply in person and bring the application form as well as relevant documents after making an appointment. Where minors are concerned, both the parents and the guardian of the applicant must be present at the appointment.
If a person has lost his/her passport or the passport has been stolen the person will need to report this to the authority that issued this passport (e.g. if your passport was issued in Berlin you will have to report the lost/stolen passport to the passport office in Berlin).
German citizens should be registered at the Registry of a German municipality. Registration permits the exercise of all the rights and duties of a citizen depending on each individual situation. The German citizen is obliged to inform his/her municipality, as well as the Consulate, of all registry data changes such as marital status, citizenship, address, etc.
