Consular services provided by the Consular section are related to the following matters:

  • German nationality;
  • Civil status (marriage, birth, etc.);
  • Passports and identity cards;
  • Certificates and apostille;
  • Visas;
  • Issuance of criminal records.

EU nationals do not require a visa to enter the Federal Republic of Germany. This includes Portuguese citizens. Nationals in possession of a valid Portuguese residence permit or a valid Portuguese long-stay visa (category D) do not need to apply for a visa to Germany for stays of up to 90 days.

Generally speaking, all other foreigners require a visa for stays in Germany. A visa is not required for visits of up to 90 days in an 180 day period for nationals of those countries for which the European Community has abolished the visa requirement.

As a rule, missions require between two and ten working days to decide on an application for a short stay visa. Applications for visas entitling the holder to a longer stay or to take up gainful employment may take several months to process.

The Embassy is closed on German and Portuguese holidays.
