The Legal and Consular section offers many services to their customers, be it visa, passports, answering questions of German citizenship, or other consular services.
The German Missions issue passports to German citizens residing in South Africa. If you reside in the Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga or North-West submit your application to the German Embassy Pretoria, if you reside in the Eastern, Northern or Western Cape submit your application to the German Consulate General in Cape Town.
For children under the age of 12 with German citizenship, a child’s passport may also be issued instead of a regular passport. A new passport law has been in effect since Nov. 1, 2007. Under this new law, fingerprints also must be stored on a chip contained in German passports. This affects all passport applicants six years and older. It is therefore absolutely necessary that you personally apply for the passport.
Processing a passport can take from six to eight weeks. Please submit the application approximately three months before your current passport expires. If there are compelling reasons (valid proof needed, e.g. flight tickets, medical certificate) for you to receive a passport on short notice, a temporary passport can be issued when you apply for a new passport.
According to the so-called Schengen agreement, a Schengen Visa entitles the holder to an accumulated stay of up to 90 days within a period of 6 months for 26 European Countries.
NOTE: Please check the applicable category to ascertain which additional documents you must submit. In individual cases one may be asked to submit further documentation.
Visitor’s visa requirements:
• One completed visa application form;
• Passport valid minimum of 90 days after expiry of requested visa; 2 copies of pages containing personal information; copied of pages with recent Schenngen visa(s); one recent biometric passport picture;
• Document confirming employment;
• Documents reflecting the nature of the trip;
• Documents confirming sufficient funds available for the trip;
• Flight ticket and hotel reservation;
• Overseas medical insurance;
• Additional documents for accompanying minors (younger than 18 years of age).
Incomplete applications will not be accepted. In this respect, please pay particular attention to the photo chart as photos for visa application forms must meet specific criteria.
The visa fee for all visa categories is 60,00 Euro (Minors between the age of 6 and 12 years pay 35,00 Euro), payable in cash (South African Rand) or by credit card (Master and Visa cards only - NO debit cards accepted) upon application. Additional charges by your bank may apply when using a credit card.
All documentation requirements for a successful application need to be met, despite exemption from fees. No fees will be refunded, in cases of denials/refusals. The visa fee is not a “granting” but processing fee.
