The German Embassy in London is the formal communication link between the German and the British governments. The Ambassador heads the Embassy and is the official representative to United Kingdom of the German Government. The Embassy fulfills the role of a German public authority when it comes to consular and migration-related matters, which include issuance of passports and different kinds of certificates, visas for students, residence and work permits as well as assistance to Germans in emergency situations.
Please note that all passport applicants have to make an appointment early in advance. Passport applicants are required to apply in person and bring the application form as well as relevant documents after making an appointment. Where minors are concerned, both the parents and the guardian of the applicant must be present at the appointment.
If a person has lost his/her passport or the passport has been stolen the person will need to report this to the authority that issued this passport (e.g. if your passport was issued in Berlin you will have to report the lost/stolen passport to the passport office in Berlin). Please only send the application form to the Embassy in London if one's lost/stolen passport was issued in London.
Since the issuing of European passports can take up to several weeks, in case of proven emergencies the German Embassy in London can issue a temporary passport (valid for 1 year) in addition to the full passport. The temporary passport will be invalidated upon receipt of the full passport. Generally, passport applicants are required to apply in person after making an appointment.
Please note that all visa applicants have to make an appointment early in advance. Visa applicants are required to apply in person and bring the application form as well as relevant documents after making an appointment.
NOTE: Only passports that have been issued during the past ten years can be endorsed with a visa. If the applicants' passport was issued longer than 10 years ago, please apply for a new passport at their Embassy.
