The Consular Section acts as the competent Greek authority in matters such as passports, notary services and certain specific legal transactions, and advises non-Greek citizens with entry permit matters. It also assists other Greek authorities with citizenship, population register, military service and family law matters, and with arrangements for absentee voting.

The consular services include:

• Driving License
• Family and legal matters
• Elections
• Legalisation
• Legislation, etc.

In case of loss or theft, the holder of the lost passport must report the loss immediately to the nearest police or consular authority (the same holds true if the lost passport is found). The above authority carries out an investigation (which may last up to 3 months) into the circumstances under which the passport was lost or stolen. During the investigation, a new passport is not issued to the applicant unless it is deemed necessary that the applicant travel abroad to receive medical treatment. In cases of emergency, provisional travelling documents can be issued by our Consular Missions abroad for the repatriation of Greek citizens.

To obtain certification of change of residency, Greeks abroad address themselves to the nearest Consular Authority, where they can obtain information regarding the documentation they will need to make their application. Note that documentation for obtaining permanent residency differs from country to country, as do the competent agencies from which documentation for permanent residency is obtained.
