Hungarian General Consulate in Wellington is responsible for everything south of Waikato, including the South Island.

The General Consulate provides most of the standard consular services.

Passports can be renewed in person in Canberra (allow 6-8 weeks) or in Budapest (allow 3-4 weeks). The applicant will need an existing Hungarian passport which can be returned to the applicant if so requested and Hungarian documents such as birth, marriage, and divorce certificates.

The processing in Budapest takes up to 28 days. In cases of urgency, for double the fee, the processing takes up to 8 days. If one does not have a permanent address in Hungary, then the applicant must submit the application in Hungary at the Central Passport Office (1133 Budapest, Visegrádi u. 110-112), where it is advisable to make an appointment ahead of time.

If the passport is already expired (even by one day), the applicant can only renew it by submitting another citizenship application. This will add about 3 months to the processing time.

If a passport is lost or stolen it needs to be reported to the Police and consequently to the Consulate–General in Wellington or the Consulate in Auckland, whichever is nearer, where an official file is prepared based on the police record. The lost passport can be replaced with a temporary travel document issued by the Embassy in Canberra if necessary.

The Working Holiday Agreement (WHA) between New Zealand and Hungary will be launched on 22 April 2013 at 10am New Zealand time on the Immigration New Zealand's webpage. The scheme encourages applications to be made online to ensure applicants do not miss out. Applications for New Zealanders wishing to go to Hungary should be directed to the nearest Consulate.

The assessment of the citizenship is done exclusively by the Citizenship Department of the Ministry of the Interior in Budapest. Applications lodged in New Zealand need to be submitted through the Consulate-General in Wellington or the Consulate in Auckland to the Hungarian Embassy in Canberra, Australia, who send it by diplomatic courier to the Ministry in Hungary. First-time applications submitted from New Zealand generally take 10-12 months. A Hungarian passport can be issued only to Hungarians whose births are registered in Hungary.
