The primary mission of the Embassy is to further develop the political, economic, cultural, educational and scientific relations, as well as promote tourism and people-to-people contacts between Hungary and South Africa, building upon the cordial bonds based on common democratic values and mutual inclination for cooperation. The main commitment is to assist the Hungarian and the South African people to become more acquainted with each other’s history, rich cultural heritage, traditions, customs and ways of living as well as the abundant natural beauties, in order to bring them closer to each other, in spite of the huge geographical distance.

The Hungarian Embassy in Pretoria offers effective, up to date, client-friendly consular service to Hungarian visitors coming here and to the large Hungarian community in South Africa. In case of emergency or personal security issues, every Hungarian citizen can rely on the assistance of our mission. The Embassy actively promotes tourism and administers matters related to visits or longer term stays of South African citizens in Hungary.

If one’s Hungarian passport has expired, your application for a new passport must be accompanied by a nationality questionnaire, to assist the passport office in their procedures. The same procedure applies if you have never possessed a Hungarian passport, but your birth has already been registered in Hungary.

The applicant has to appear in person to be able to provide his/her biometric data (10 fingerprints, digital signature, digital photo) and submit other documents (copy of their Hungarian birth certificate and marriage certificate if applicable) at the Embassy in Pretoria, showing a valid Hungarian identity document (passport or ID) or a valid Certificate of Citizenship. All passport requests are filed electronically. There is no request form to fill in.

Hungary joined the Schengen Area on 19 December, 2007. From that time visas and residence permits issued by one of the Schengen Member States are valid also for Hungary, and visas/residence permits issued by Hungarian authorities are - as a general rule - also valid for the entire Schengen Area. The Schengen regulations are only applicable for a stay not exceeding 90 days. Rules for a stay longer than 90 days are laid down by the national law of the member states concerned.
