The Icelandic Embassy in Ottawa represents Iceland vis-à-vis Canada as well as Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Nicaragua and Venezuela. The Embassy's mission is to strengthen and promote political, economic and cultural relations with these countries. The Embassy opened in May 2001.
Canada is one of Iceland's closest neighbors and allies and there are more people of Icelandic descent living in Canada than anywhere else outside of Iceland.
The Embassy runs an Overseas Business Service for North-America, located in New York.
The Embassy provides Icelandic citizens with various consular services, such as voting, the renewal of passports and assistance in emergency situations, requiring official involvement.
The Embassy in Ottawa does not have the technology available to accept applications for a renewal of Icelandic passports. However, it is possible to prolong the validity of Icelandic passports for one year as of the date that it expires. In case of an emergency, the Embassy can issue emergency passports to Icelandic citizen that need to get back to Iceland, where they can apply for a renewal of their current passport. It should be noted that emergency passports are not ideal travel documents.
The Icelandic Consulates across Canada can also extend the validity of passports as well as issue emergency passports just like the Embassy.
If the passport is stolen in Canada or abroad, the traveler should immediately report the loss to the nearest police station. One also needs to report a loss of the passport to the issuing authority. The Icelandic Embassy can assist the applicant by issuing a temporary travel document.
Canadian citizens carrying a valid Canadian passport do not need visas when visiting Iceland or the Schengen countries as tourists for less than three months. All travelers to Iceland must be in possession of a passport, valid at least for three months beyond their intended stay. Canadian citizens wanting to stay longer or reside in Iceland must apply for a residence permit at the Directorate of Immigrations. In addition to that, nationals of many countries are required to obtain a visa prior to entering Iceland.
