The mission of the Embassy is to promote the political, security, economic and cultural relations between Iceland, Finland and other countries in the Embassy's jurisdiction, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Ukraine.

Iceland and Finland entered into diplomatic relations in 1947. Initially Iceland's Embassy was in Stockholm. A separate Embassy was opened in Helsinki in 1997. The Icelandic Ambassador in Finland is accredited to the following states: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Ukraine. The Embassy in Helsinki therefore is responsible for safeguarding Icelandic interest and works to further develop good relations with the respective states.

The Embassy's consular services include among other things issuing of Icelandic emergency passports, assistance in connection with illness and death and legislation.

As of May 17th 2006 Iceland starts issuing new Biometric Passports. From July 2006, Icelandic Citizens will be able to apply for the new Biometric Passports through Icelandic Embassies in Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, London and Washington.

Other Icelandic Embassies and Icelandic Consulates cannot accept applications for Icelandic Passports as of May 17th 2006. Consulates can prolong the validity of Icelandic Passports but only for one year as of the date that it expired. Emergency Passports are only issued to Icelandic Citizens that are not able to apply for new passports through Icelandic Embassies. It should be noted that Emergency Passports are not ideal travel documents.

If your passport is stolen in Finland or abroad, you should immediately report the loss to the nearest police station. You also need to report a loss of your passport to the issuing authority. The Icelandic Embassy in Norway can help you either by issuing a new passport or a temporary travel document.
