The Embassy of Iceland in London was opened in 1940, being the second Icelandic Embassy after the establishment of the Icelandic Foreign Service earlier that year. The Embassy represents Iceland in the United Kingdom and is also accredited to seven other countries, i.e. Ireland, Jordan, Malta, Nigeria, Portugal, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
The role of the Embassy is to protect the interests of Icelanders and to promote bilateral, political, economic and cultural links between Iceland and the above countries. In 2004 about 2-3 thousand Icelanders were domiciled in the United Kingdom and over 75 thousand people travelled from the United Kingdom to Iceland in 2007.
The Embassy's consular services include issuing of Icelandic passports, Icelandic driving licences, assistance in connection with illness and death and legislation.
Icelandic nationals who wish to apply for a new passport must do so in person at the Embassy. Passports are issued in Iceland and the estimated processing time is five working days with additional 3-4 days for postage. Please note that consuls can no longer receive applications for new passports. However, they can extend passports and issue provisional and emergency passports.
If a person's passport is stolen in the UK or abroad, one should immediately report the loss to the nearest police station. The applicant also needs to report a loss of the passport to the issuing authority. The Icelandic Embassy in London can help the person either by issuing a new passport or a temporary travel document.
NOTE: All consular fees should be paid in CASH.
