The Embassy in Berne has consular jurisdiction over the whole of Switzerland, as well as the Principality of Liechtenstein.

For functional reasons, residents of French speaking areas of Switzerland, viz. Neuchatél, Lausanne, Nyon, Valais, Vaud, Montreux, Geneva etc. may apply for consular and visa services at the Consulate General of India, Geneva.

Services provided by the Embassy:

  • Apostille of Indian documents;
  • Passport services;
  • Issuance of PIO and OCI cards;
  • Indian community welfare fund (ICWF) services;
  • Issuance of civil status certificates;
  • Voting rights to overseas Indians;
  • Registration of Indians living abroad.

In case of loss of passports, concerned Indian nationals will have either of the following options:

  • They can apply for one-way Emergency Certificate for returning to India, or,
  • A Short Validity Passport (SVP), hand-written and valid for six months for the purpose of immediate travel to any other country. Please note that for visas in respect of other countries individual arrangements have to be made with respective Embassies/Consulates.

A Police Report about the loss of Indian Passport is needed when applying for both. The Report should reflect the complete details of lost passport plus passport copy.

VFS Global India Pvt Ltd is the service provider for visa services of Embassy of India in Berne.

e-Tourist Visa Facility is available for nationals of Switzerland. Eligibility:

  • Sole objective of visiting India is recreation, sightseeing, casual visit to meet friends or relatives, short duration medical treatment or casual business visit.
  • Passport should have at least six months validity from the date of arrival in India. The passport should have at least two blank pages for stamping by the Immigration Officer.
  • Should have return ticket or onward journey ticket, with sufficient money to spend during stay in India.
  • Applicants having Pakistani passport or Pakistani origin may please apply for regular Visa at Indian mission.
  • Not available to diplomatic/official passport holders.
  • Not available to individuals endorsed on parent’s/spouse’s passport.
  • Not available to international travel document holders.

As per Government of India’s guidelines, carrying satellite phones by foreigners into India is banned (not allowed). All travellers are requested not to carry any satellite phones with them to avoid confiscation of their personal phones. 

The Embassy is closed on public holidays.
