The Consular department issues visas to US citizens and to foreign nationals in the US traveling to India. It also provides passport and other consular services to the Indian citizens who live in the US, including limited legal assistance in case of emergency. Returning Indians/visitors to India are also guided about the prevailing health, and custom tariff regulations. A Minister heads the department.

Applications for all consular services (like issue of diplomatic visas, renewals and miscellaneous services on passports, legalization/attestation of documents) are accepted between 10.00 and 12.30. The documents are delivered only between 10.00 and 12.30 on working days (Embassy Holidays). This time schedule does not apply to services where prior approval is required from the authorities in India.

Emergency Services will be available on Saturdays & Sundays and other holidays and are granted to persons of Indian origin only living in the jurisdiction covered by the Embassy of India, Washington DC between 11.00 and 13.00 in case of a genuine emergency like death or illness of a blood relation, subject to production of proof and confirmed air ticket. An amount of US$100 is charged, over and above the normal visa fees, for providing emergency service. 

Emergency service will not be available to applicants falling under reference categories. This service is not available for visa applications sent by mail. One may wish to enquire from the concerned officer about arrangements for such emergency service. The decision of the Consular Officer in this matter shall be final.

Important Note: The Embassy of India, Washington DC and the Indian Consulate of Chicago will no longer be accepting applications under Lost/Stolen Category by mail/Post, Applicants applying under this category must apply in person.

An Emergency Certificate (one-way travel document), which authorizes an Indian citizen to enter India, is issued to individuals who have lost their passports or their passports have been stolen or damaged and to whom new passports cannot be issued without approval from India. This document is issued primarily with the objective of ensuring the applicant’s return to India in an emergency. Applicants should fill in the application form as prescribed for the issue of a new passport (see Application Form for an Indian Passport) and seek a personal interview with the Consular Officer whose decision will be final.

Note: To avoid inconvenience EMERGENCY TRAVEL DOCUMENT applicants are requested to approach the Consular Wing with completed application and all necessary supporting documents.

Applicants must first visit the Embassy of India, Washington DC between (10.00 – 12.00) or Indian consulate of Chicago (455 North City front Plaza, Suite 850, NBC Tower Chicago, Illinois 60611) to seek approval from the concerned authorities before submitting the application at the Indian Passport Application Center-Chicago or Center-Washington DC.

NOTE:

  • Incomplete/Improper Applications will be turned back at the counter or returned if applying by mail
  • Embassy/Consulate Reserve right to ask other document from the list of document mentioned above and/or may call the applicants for interview.
  • For all Lost Cases (Not the Damage) applicant has to get approval first from the Indian Consulate/Embassy.
