Official relations between Indonesia-German could be traced back to 1952 when diplomatic relations was first established. Initially a Permanent Representative Office in Bonn and a Consulate were established during the same year. Subsequently, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Bonn was established in 1954. In 1973 Indonesia also established a Permanent Representative Office in East Berlin for the Democratic Republic of Germany, which was elevated into an Embassy in 1976.
The Embassy facilitates various areas of Indonesia-Germany bilateral cooperation including cooperation in the fields of political; economic; trade; information; protocol and consular; immigration; education and culture; as well as defense.
In addition, the Embassy provides wide range of services for the German citizens, such as consular and immigration services as well as business, tourism, study and investment related services. The Embassy provides consular services to Indonesian who are travelling or living in Germany, such as passport renewal and document legalization and other consular services.
The Indonesian Embassy's Consular Section serves Indonesian citizens and foreigners residing permanently in Indonesia with matters involving Indonesian authorities, such as passports, notary services and certain specific legal transactions, family law, citizenship and military service. The Consular Section assists Indonesian citizens in distress, gives information on the services provided by Indonesian authorities and the legal protection available to private citizens, and advises on general procedures related to legal or administrative matters in Indonesia and Germany. Foreign citizens can consult the Embassy's Consular Section on matters related to visas and entry permits.
Theft or loss of a valid passport must be reported to the police and a police report should be presented when applying for a new passport. Otherwise a passport is applied as normally. When reporting a lost passport to the police it should be noted that a report made by telephone and a registration number given on the basis of that might not be adequate proof to the insurance company. The report can be made in person at a police station so that a report of the crime is available in writing.
A Visa of the Republic of Indonesia may be issued in the form of an official stamp, a sheet of paper inserted into or attached to a passport, an ordinary card, or an electronic card. The type of visa issued shall be based on the visa application. Visa applications may be done by proxy, except for Diplomatic or Service Visa applications. A visa application should be submitted to an Embassy or Consular Office of the Republic of Indonesia or other official designated by Government of the Republic of Indonesia. Visas should be used within 90 days, calculated from the date of issuance. Any foreign national who fails to use a visa within this designated period of time must submit a re-application for a new visa.
