This Embassy in Ottawa represents Ireland in Canada and also in Jamaica and The Bahamas. Our role is to develop Irelands' relations and foster mutual understanding with the governments and peoples of Canada, Jamaica and the Bahamas.
Honorary Consuls assist the Embassy by providing a consular service to Irish citizens within their consular area. Please also note that as Honorary Consuls act in an honorary capacity, there may be times during normal office hours when the Honorary Consul may not be available to provide immediate assistance. If this occurs and the matter is urgent, you should contact the Embassy of Ireland in Ottawa immediately for assistance.
The Embassy operates an out-of-hours service for Irish citizens requiring emergency assistance. When in need of emergency assistant one should call the Embassy's main number +1 613 233 6281 and leave a message on the answering machine. The Embassy's Duty Officer will contact the person as soon as possible.
When leaving a message, the person should remember to state his/her name, the nature of the problem, their location, and the details of how the Duty Officer can contact the person. Alternatively, one may contact the Duty Officer at the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin at +353 (0)1 408 2000.
Irish citizens travelling or living overseas, outside the Common Travel Area are encouraged to register their contact details with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Registration is voluntary. It is a facility available to all Irish citizens and is intended for use by people travelling on holidays, and also for business travellers and Irish citizens living overseas. The facility is particularly useful for people travelling to remote destinations or locations where they may be at risk. The registration system records the dates on which people expect to be abroad, so it is worth registering, even for short trips.
In case of a lost or stolen passport, the person should in the first instance contact the Embassy or nearest Honorary Consulate who will assist in issuing a replacement travel document.
One should also report the loss or theft to the nearest police station as soon as possible after the event and seek a police report or certificate confirming that the applicant has made the report. The person will be required to present this when applying for a replacement travel document. Please note that, in certain circumstances, there may be a charge for requesting such reports.
If one is required to travel within a short time of having the passport lost or stolen, the person should contact the Embassy immediately so the appropriate measures can be taken.
The Embassy is closed on the following holidays:
- 1 January New Year's Day
- 18 March in lieu of St Patrick's Day
