All Italian citizens who intend to live abroad must register at the Embassy or a Consulate within 90 days of arriving in their country of residence. AIRE registration is necessary in order to obtain any and all documents and certificates issued by the Consulate as well as requests for passport renewal or issuance. Registration with the Consulate significantly reduces the time required for all procedures.

Australian Citizen are allowed to travel to Italy and stay there as a tourist for up to ninety days without a visa. The Visa Office handles the issuance of visas allowing applicants entrance into Italy or the EU. Office personnel are available to the public for consultation on what type of visa to apply for.
