Consular services are furnished on an equal, impartial, efficient and transparent basis. Consulates ensure all co-nationals protection against the violation of their fundamental rights and the limitation or privation of their personal freedom. They also ensure emergency assistance, help in locating family members, inheritance procedures initiated abroad and for the repatriation of mortal remains. Social assistance is offered to Italian citizens who become indigent and are, therefore, eligible to receive economic or other aid in order to overcome momentary difficulty.

Italian citizens living in Italy are registered in the A.P.R. ‘Anagrafe della Popolazione Residente (Resident Population Registry) of an Italian municipality and must refer to this office for refer directly to that municipality for all registry-related procedures. Italian citizens living abroad are registered in the ‘Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all’Estero’ A.I.R.E. (Registry of Italian nationals residing abroad) of their Italian municipality of origin, or where they most recently resident before expatriating. Those citizens must refer to the Consular Office of their place of residence abroad for all registry-related procedures. The Consulate acts as go-between for citizens residing abroad and the Italian municipality in which those citizens are registered.

If an Italian citizen finds himself/herself in an emergency situation (e.g. a tourist must depart from Ireland and he/she has lost his/her passport or it was stolen) and there is no time to start the procedure for the issuing of a new passport, the Consular Office will issue a provisional travel document (ETD European Travel Document). The latter is valid only to return to Italy, to travel to the foreign country of residence or, as an exception, to travel to another destination.

In order to obtain this document, it is necessary to come to the Consular Office of this Embassy with the following documents:

  • police report in the case of loss or theft of the passport or of another travel document lodged at the Consular Office, in accordance with articles of law 46 and 47 following the instructions of article of law 76 DPR 445/2000;
  • two photographs of the applicant (identical, frontal view, in color, 35x40 mm);
  • tickets for the return trip of the applicant;
  • €1.34.

Please note that this service cannot always be provided on non-working days, holiday days, or in some cases on the days before these because the Embassy will be closed. Therefore, the procedure may be done later on a working day, if it is not an emergency.
