Consular services are furnished on an equal, impartial, efficient and transparent basis. Consulates ensure all co-nationals protection against the violation of their fundamental rights and the limitation or privation of their personal freedom. They also ensure emergency assistance, help in locating family members, inheritance procedures initiated abroad and for the repatriation of mortal remains.

The Embassy offers the following consular services:

  • Registry
  • Assistance
  • Citizenship
  • Notary services
  • Electoral services
  • Passports
  • Pensions
  • Civil status
  • Study
  • Adoption
  • Visa, etc.

The Visa Office handles the issuance of visas allowing applicants entrance into Italy or the EU. Office personnel are available to the public for consultation on what type of visa to apply for.

Holders of an EEA (EU Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) or Swiss passport do not require a visa. Nationals from EU-countries as well as Switzerland and Liechtenstein may stay for an unlimited time. Holders of Latvian Passports (European Union) do not need a visa for Italy. There are no restrictions on the remaining validity of ones passport, providing the traveler leaves Italy before its expiry date.

Power of Attorney is divided into two categories:

  • General Power of Attorney: with this document the person concerned entrusts the management of all of his/her present and future affairs to the attorney or agent. The General Power of Attorney is issued for an indeterminate time.
  • Special Power of Attorney: with this document the person concerned entrusts the attorney or agent with the management of part of his/her affairs. The Special Power of Attorney is valid only up to the conclusion of the specified affair.

If an Italian citizen finds himself/herself in an emergency situation (e.g. a tourist must depart from Estonia and he/she has lost his/her passport or it was stolen) and there is no time to start the procedure for the issuing of a new passport, the Consular Office will issue a provisional travel document (ETD European Travel Document). The latter is valid only to return to Italy, to travel to the foreign country of residence or, as an exception, to travel to another destination.

Theft or loss of a valid passport must be reported to the police and a police report should be presented when applying for a new passport. Otherwise a passport is applied as normally. When reporting a lost passport to the police it should be noted that a report made by telephone and a registration number given  on the basis of that might not be adequate proof to the insurance company. The report can be made in person at a police station so that a report of the crime is available in writing.
