Consulates ensure all co-nationals protection against the violation of their fundamental rights and the limitation or privation of their personal freedom. They also ensure emergency assistance; help in locating family members, inheritance procedures initiated abroad and for the repatriation of mortal remains.

Italian citizens should be registered at the Registry of an Italian municipality. Registration permits the exercise of all the rights and duties of a citizen depending on each individual situation. The Italian citizen is obliged to inform his/her municipality, as well as the Consulate, of all registry data changes.

Notifying the Consulate of changes regarding registration data, in addition to being a citizen’s duty, allows the Italian Consulates to maintain updated records regarding their citizens residing abroad, thus facilitating both the distribution of all services requested in Italy and abroad, as well as communication between the Consulates and Italian citizens living within their jurisdiction.

In case of a lost passport the citizen must go in person to the Passport Office of the Consular Jurisdiction with the following documentation:

  • claim of theft or loss of passport filed at the local police authority
  • valid photo ID
  • permit to be in the country or justification of residence in the jurisdiction

An Italian citizen in an emergency situation - e.g. a tourist in transit who must leave unexpectedly or who loses or is robbed of his/her passport - the Consulate General issues a document called a "Travel Document", which is valid only for re-entry in Italy. In order to obtain this it is necessary to go in person to the Consulate with the following documentation:

  • claim of theft or loss of passport filed at the local police authority
  • two photos (identical, full-face and in colour)
  • original airline ticket with confirmed departure date
