The Italian Consulate General can issue temporary emergency documents called E.T.D. (Emergency Travel Documents) to assist nationals to return to Italy. This document is only valid for 5 days from the date of issue.

To obtain an ETD, one must come to the Italian Consulate in person (an appointment is not necessary) between the hours of 9.00 – 12.00 from Monday to Friday, or on Saturday from 9.00 – 13.00.  For other times outside of our opening hours, the applicants  are advised to call the Consular emergency mobile number for further advice: 0044 (0)7850 752 895

Applying for passports:

  • To be able to issue a Biometric passport, the applicant’s presence in the Consulate is required, so that biometric data (picture, signature and finger prints) can be taken; for this reason, it is necessary to book an appointment online and to come in person.
  • Children under the age of 12 are exempt from finger print acquisition. Consequently, and ONLY in this instance, it is possible to apply for a passport via post, by simply following the instructions found in the checklist section of the application form.
  • ALL applications that are INCOMPLETE and/or that do not adhere to the detailed instructions clearly listed in the various checklists provided within the application forms will not be processed.

The Registry Office (Ufficio di Stato Civile) deals with the registration of British certificates of birth, marriage and death, and divorce decrees relating to Italian Citizens. All these documents will not be kept at the Consulate but will be sent to the relevant Italian Town Hall. For Italians registered with this Consulate it can also issue a number of certificates on the basis of the records of this Consulate General.
