Diplomatic relations between Japan and Belgium were established in 1866 with the signing of the Treaty of Friendship and Commerce. Belgium actively seeks to strengthen and expand relations with Japan. An extremely close relationship exists between the Japanese imperial family and the Belgian royal family.
Consular services provided by the Embassy:
- Issuance of passports;
- Issuance of various certificates (birth, death, marriage, divorce, criminal record, etc.);
- Citizenship matters;
- Issuance of visas;
- Registration of Japanese citizens abroad;
- Notarial matters;
- Assistance to Japanese citizens in cases of emergency.
In case of lost or stolen Japanese passport, holders of the lost/stolen passport should immediately report it to the local police.
If a person has theĀ Belgian nationality, he/she does not need a visa if his/her period of stay in Japan is 90 days or less and if he/she is not going to be engaged in income-earning activities (i.e. Sightseeing, recreation, amateur sports, visiting relatives, short-term study, inspection tour, participation in unpaid lectures or meetings, attending a conference, short-term business or similar non-remunerative activities.)
When undergoing landing examination during passport control in Japan, please be advised to carry the following documents:
- A valid passport (this is not the Belgian ID card)
- A fixed-date, confirmed return ticket (E-tickets are also accepted) or onward journey ticket
- Relevant documentation concerning person's itinerary (i.e. hotel reservations, conference detailsā¦) and proof of sufficient funds
When visiting the Consular Section of the Embassy of Japan, visitors will be requested at the ground floor reception to state the purpose of their visit. A security officer will check their luggage before they can proceed to the first floor.
Visitors are required to bring their Belgian ID card or residency card when visiting the Consular Section.
The consular service does not respond to enquiries by mail. If people have any questions they can always contact the service directly by telephone during office hours.
The Embassy is closed on public holidays.
