The Consular Section of the Japanese Embassy in New Zealand provides consular assistance and services to overseas Japanese, which include citizen registration, identification documents and passport related matters, emergency travel documents, legalization of documents, etc. The Consulate also issues visas to foreign nations who wish to visit Japan and offers a range of other services and information on Japan.

The Japanese Embassy and other representations in New Zealand offer various visas including Work, Study, Working holiday visas, etc.

Visa fees are determined according to reciprocal arrangements between Japan and the country of the applicant's nationality. There is no fee for New Zealand passport holders. For further information regarding visa fees, please contact your regional office.

In principle, visa applications will be processed within three to five working days of acceptance if all the documentation is in order. Note that for some visa categories, or in cases where additional information is required, processing time will be longer. Working Holiday visas take approximately three weeks. The applicant should ensure that he/she allow ample time for visa application to be processed.

Japan and New Zealand has an established Working Holiday Scheme. The Scheme enables visa holders to enter Japan for a long-term holiday, and if necessary, work on a casual/temporary basis to supplement travel funds. It is not for the purpose of regular full-time employment in Japan. With this visa, New Zealand citizens need not obtain further permission to engage in remunerative activities while in Japan, provided these activities do not contravene Japanese law regulating businesses offering food and entertainment as well as any other regulations in force which affect public order and good morals
