In case Japanese passport is lost or stolen, it should be immediately reported to the local police and a police notification must be obtained.

Under Japan's Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act, it is stipulated that any foreigner wishing to enter Japan must possess a valid passport and a valid Japan visa. Accordingly, if a foreigner does not possess the necessary visa, in principle, he or she could be refused landing permission.

A visa cannot be acquired after arriving in Japan and a visa itself does not guarantee landing (status of residence) permission. The possession of a visa satisfies only one of the conditions for application for landing at an airport or seaport. In other words, foreigners in possession of a visa will not automatically qualify entry until they receive landing permission after going through immigration examination.

Depending on nationality, the purpose of visit and the length of intended stay, a foreigner may or may not require a visa to enter Japan.

As of April 2006, Japan had made arrangements with 62 countries and regions concerning the waiver of visa requirements, as shown in the accompanying table. Nationals of these countries and regions holding valid passports can apply for landing permission for short-term stays for such purposes as sightseeing and business trips without obtaining a visa. Since Singapore is one of these countries that has such an arrangement with Japan, Singapore citizens (Singapore passport holders) do not require a visa to enter Japan for temporary visits up to 90 days. However, this arrangement neither permits the engagement in paid activities nor staying beyond the period allowed in each arrangement. In such cases, it is necessary for these foreigners and Singaporeans to obtain a visa.

As a security measure, visitors are required to present their identity cards or other relevant identification documents (e.g. passport) at the security guard house. If these are unavailable, other forms of English identification carrying a facial photo may be accepted.
