The Netherlands Embassy in Helsinki is an outpost of the Netherlands in Finland. The Embassy provides consular services and represents, promotes and protects the interests of the government of the Netherlands, as well as those of Dutch nationals living in Finland. There are different angles.

The consular section provides various services for Dutch nationals in Finland. The most important tasks are issuing Dutch passports and identity cards and providing assistance to Dutch nationals in distress. In addition to those tasks the Embassy provides services to foreign nationals who would like to travel to -or work in- the Netherlands, for example in assisting by applications for temporary residence permits (MVV). Another task is providing information on matters like obtaining the Dutch nationality and legalization.

If you’ve been robbed, the local Dutch embassy or consulate will assist you. For example:

  • Has your passport or identity document been stolen abroad? Or have you lost your passport? You can apply to the local Dutch Embassy for a temporary travel document (an emergency passport or laissez-passer).
  • The Embassy can advise you on how your relatives in the Netherlands can transfer money to you.
  • The Embassy will contact local lawyers or interpreters who can give you further assistance.

There is a lot of misunderstanding about what a Dutch embassy or consulate can and cannot do. It cannot:

  • lend or give you money to pay the bills of lawyers, hotels, restaurants, pharmacies, etc.;
  • pay your return fare;
  • investigate the offence.

Dutch travel documents are produced and personalized at a central facility in the Netherlands. The average time between applying and collecting is 2-3 weeks. In an emergency, an embassy or consulate can issue a temporary travel document (an emergency passport or a laissez-passer), on which you can leave the country. If possible, such a document is issued on the same day and otherwise within a few days. But remember that an emergency document will cost you extra money. When applying for a travel document your identity and nationality need to be established. When applying for a (new) travel document, you need several things. The Embassy reserves the right to request additional information. The Act on Dutch nationality will be consulted in all cases.

NOTE: From July 1st 2013 payments can only be made with a debit card.
