Polish citizens should be registered at the Registry of a Polish municipality. Registration permits the exercise of all the rights and duties of a citizen depending on each individual situation. If foreign nationals intend to stay in the territory of Poland and/or any other Schengen states (during one or more visits) for a total of up to 90 days within a half-year period calculated from the date of first entry, or plan to pass through Schengen territory (by train, car or plane), they need to apply for a Schengen C-type visa. Citizens of Austria (and any other EU member state) are not required to be in possession of a visa when entering Poland for less than 90 days.
Theft or loss of a valid passport must be reported to the police and a police report should be presented when applying for a new passport. Otherwise a passport is applied as normally. When reporting a lost passport to the police it should be noted that a report made by telephone and a registration number given on the basis of that might not be adequate proof to the insurance company. The report can be made in person at a police station so that a report of the crime is available in writing.
