Citizens of the European Union, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Romania and Switzerland need only an identity card to enter Portugal. For citizens of some countries willing to stay in Portugal for less than 90 days, a passport valid for at least three months after the end of their stay is necessary. Citizens from other countries need a visa to enter Portugal, which may be requested at the Portuguese Embassy or Consulate of their country for stays of up to 90 days.

A long stay visa is regulated in the framework of the existing national legislation and may be either for temporary stays or for residence, according to the length of the stay. Such visas allow their holder to remain in Portugal for the intended purpose: e. g. study, internship, work or medical treatment.
In general, a temporary stay visa is valid for 4 months and multiple entries.
A residence visa is usually valid for 2 entries and 4 months, after which its holder must have obtained a residence permit.

For each visa application a visa fee is paid. It refers to the analysis of the visa application and does not guarantee its concession. The application is considered admissible after the visa fee is charged.
