Consular services provided by the Consular Section of the Embassy:

  • Consular registration of Portuguese citizens abroad;
  • Issuance of identity documents (citizen card, ID card);
  • Issuance of passports;
  • Issuance of visas;
  • Marriage abroad matters;
  • Nationality matters;
  • Birth registration;
  • Military service matters;
  • Issuance of residence certificates;
  • Voting in national electoral events;
  • Assistance to Portuguese citizens in cases of emergency while abroad.

In case Portuguese passport is lost or stolen, it should be immediately reported to the passport issuing authority in order to cancel the passport. Portuguese diplomatic mission can issue a temporary passport or single travel permit to return to Portugal.

Romanian citizens do not require a visa to visit Portugal. Citizens of other countries may require a Schengen visa to enter Portugal for short stays of up to 90 days.

Requirements for a Schengen visa for short-term stays:

  • Signed and filled in Form (in case of minors or incapacitated the form should be signed by their legal tutor);
  • Authentic and valid travel document for more than 3 months beyond the foreseen exit date – photocopy of the passport and previous visas;
  • One passport photograph;
  • Proof of “regular situation” in case of being from a country other than the one where the visa is solicited;
  • Reservation of inbound and outbound flight;
  • Labour-Economic conditions: proof of the employing entity and the salary received in the last 3 months, bank extracts (proof of income) that guarantee the stay and return;
  • Travel Medical Insurance (minimum coverage of 30.000 Euros to cover any expenses which might arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention and/or emergency hospital care or death, during the stay(s) on the territory of the Member States);
  • Hotel reservation (if applicable) or “term of responsibility”. If the stay is with a family member, proof of kinship should be made and it may be solicited the proof of the conditions of accommodation. In case the subscriber of the “term of responsibility” is not Portuguese, he/she should submit legal documental situation in Portugal;
  • Travel authorization for minors or court decision (when applicable);
  • Guaranteed accommodation by family member or by the host, or a hotel reservation;
  • In business trips an invitation shall be presented with the motive of the journey, dates of arrival and departure, as well as the indication of the host with the name of the one responsible for the invitation;
  • In case of participating in political, economical, scientific, cultural, religious or sport events, proof enrolment in the event should be presented.

For each visa application a visa fee is paid. It refers to the analysis of the visa application and does not guarantee its concession.

The application is considered admissible after the visa fee is charged.

It should be noted that it is absolutely forbidden to enter the Embassy with any sharp objects (scissors, knives, etc.) or any other type of weapon.

The Embassy is closed on public holidays.
