Consular affairs involve protecting and promoting the interests of Swedish nationals abroad, whether they live there or are there temporarily for business or pleasure. The Embassy issues emergency documents, deals with visa applications and legalise documents. When Swedish nationals run into difficulties abroad, the embassy or consulate can provide assistance.

The Administrative and Consular Section deals with the following matters:

  • Visas
  • Residence and Work permits
  • Driving License
  • Family and legal matters
  • Elections
  • Legalisation
  • Legislation, etc.

As of 1 January 2014, it will no longer be possible to apply for a regular Swedish passport at the Embassy in Tallinn. This is also the case at our other embassies in the Nordic and Baltic countries. Swedish citizens in these countries will instead have to submit their applications at a passport authority in Sweden (i.e. a police station that issues passports) or at a Swedish Embassy that is still authorized to issue passports.

It will, however, still be possible to collect a passport that has been applied for in Sweden from the Embassy. The Embassy will also still be able to issue temporary (emergency) passports to Swedish citizens.

Sweden takes part in the Schengen cooperation. If you already have a valid visa issued by a Schengen country, it is usually valid also for visits to Sweden. In exceptional cases, the visa may only be valid for entry into the issuing country or only for certain countries. Thus, you may need to apply for a visa. Within the Schengen area this service is offered at the embassy in Athens, Berlin, Madrid, Paris and Rome.

NOTE: The Swedish Embassy in Tallinn does not handle visa applications.

Theft or loss of a valid passport must be reported to the police and a police report should be presented when applying for a new passport. Otherwise a passport is applied as normally. When reporting a lost passport to the police it should be noted that a report made by telephone and a registration number given on the basis of that might not be adequate proof to the insurance company. The report can be made in person at a police station so that a report of the crime is available in writing.

The Embassy is closed on the following holidays:

  • 1 January - New Year's Day
  • 6 January - Epiphany
  • 24 February - Estonian Independence Day
  • March/April - Good Friday
  • March/April - Easter Monday
  • 20 June - Swedish Midsummer Eve
  • 24 June - Estonian Midsummer Day
  • 20 August - Day of Restoration of Independence in Estonia
  • 24 - 26 December - Christmas
  • 31 December - New Year's Eve
