The Embassy is also responsible for the cooperation with the regional organisation SADC (Southern Africa Development Community) with its head office in Gaborone, Botswana. Ambassador Anders Hagelberg is the representative of the Government of Sweden to SADC.

The Embassy promotes commercial and trade exchanges between Sweden and South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. In cooperation with Business Sweden, the Embassy assists companies to find business partners and opportunities for trade and investment.

The consular section assists both Swedish citizens who are visiting South Africa, Botswana and Namibia, and South African citizens who wish to visit Sweden. VFS Global in Pretoria and Cape Town handle respectively visa applications from South Africa to Sweden. However, please note that it is the German Embassy in Gaborone handles visa applications from Botswana to Sweden, while the Finnish Embassy in Windhoek is responsible for visa applications from Namibia to Sweden.

Passport application procedures have changed to increase the security of travel documents. All passport applicants at the Embassy of Sweden in Pretoria must be digitally photographed at the Embassy at the time of the application. Applications may no longer be submitted at the honorary consulate in Cape Town, South Africa.

As Swedish missions abroad began to use photo stations, honorary consulates ceased to act as passport offices.  The honorary consulate in Cape Town in South Africa can therefore no longer accept applications for regular passports or identity cards.

New passports and identity cards may still be picked up at honorary consulates against a fee (see further under application/renewal of passport) The Embassy in Pretoria must verify the quality of the new passport or identity card and then forward it to the honorary consulate. The applicant's identity must be verified when he or she picks up the document.

To improve the service available to those applying for a visa, the Embassy cooperates with VFS Global. You present your application in person to VFS Global/ Swedish Visa application Centre in Pretoria or Cape Town and they can also provide you with information and other kinds of service. When the decision has come through, after about 15 days, you collect your passport and your visa at the VFS Global/ Swedish Visa application Centre in Pretoria or Cape Town.
